Society of Antiquaries of Scotland Correspondence

 

 

 

This collection contains nine bound volumes of manuscripts and one envelope of loose letters. There is no indication of when the volumes were bound, but with the exception of volumes I & II which were rebound in 1982, the bindings are not modern.

 

Volumes titled Correspondence Soc of Antiq of Scotland I 1780 – 1781 [ ]; II 1781 – 1782  [1783 – 1784 letters missing; 202 letters]; III 1785 – 1825  [135 letters]; IV 1826 – 1828  [153 letters]; V 1829 −1831 [211 letters]; VI 1831 – 1834  [168 letters];VII 1835−1844  [158 letters]; VIII 1844−1852 [206 letters]. VIIIA is an envelope of loose letters, 1852-55. Vol IX is titled Letter Book on the spine and is mostly letters of 1853-1855 with a few from 1850 and 1852 [93 letters].

 

The volumes are paginated (with the exception of Vol IX) and each letter is numbered as follows below.

This Volume begins with original hand-drawn title page: Letters relative to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Volume

In pencil, vol 1 and the date 1831.

Each ms has a number in ink at the head, but they have not been bound in that numerical order and there are gaps.

8A/1/1 Letter to Daniel Wilson from John Stuart, Aberdeen, 20 January 1852.

Accompanies notes on ‘some curious circles’ and a list of articles for the Museum (neither item present), the articles having been sent separately in a box. Asks advice about how to find in one publication the proceedings (meetings) of antiquarian societies throughout Britain. ‘The Athenaeum confines itself to Societies in London – and the Gentleman’s Magazine is such a worthless book to have merely for the sake of the notices of Societies’.

 

8A/1/2  Three letters to J A Smith from W H Scott of 4 Rutland Street, Edinburgh, n.d.     

(though filed with 1852 letters).

Monday.  Has been examining coins and has no comment on those found at Edzell. Refers to coins of Titus and small Scottish coins. Sends note on ‘a little reliquary of Mr Drummond Hay’s’, which he found ‘among a parcel of coins in his cabinet’.

Saturday. Mr Laing ‘almost prevailed’ upon him in respect of the Society’s Secretaryship, but health prohibits.

Friday evening. Will send ‘the die, and the book illustrative of it, also Mr Sim’s Aberbrothoc seal’ for exhibition.

25 January 1853. Sends old lock taken from the door of John Knox’s House ‘about 27 years ago’.

 

11 April 1853. The lock is ready to be collected for exhibition at the meeting that evening and he encloses copy of affidavit made by man who removed the lock from the door. Disgruntled about lack of interest from the Society.

 

20 June 1853. Doubt has been expressed about provenance of lock, and he encloses documentation.
